Bottom Line
A reliable, no-nonsense cleanser that actually controls oil without turning your face into the Sahara Desert.
I’ve been using this CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser every morning and night for the past four months, and it’s become the most boring part of my skincare routine — in the best way possible. My combination skin tends to get shiny by lunchtime, and I was skeptical that a $16.99 cleanser would make any difference compared to my previous drugstore pick.
What I like about it
The foam is what sold me initially. You only need about a quarter-sized amount (maybe half an inch in diameter), and it lathers into this rich, cushiony foam that feels like you’re actually cleaning your face, not just smearing soap around. It rinses off completely in about 10 seconds under lukewarm water, leaving zero film or residue behind. I used to have to rinse my old cleanser three or four times to get that squeaky-clean feeling, but this one does it in one go.
The niacinamide ingredient really does work over time. I didn’t notice much in the first week, but around week three, my boyfriend asked if I’d changed my makeup routine because my pores looked smaller around my nose. I hadn’t changed anything except this cleanser. My skin also feels balanced — not tight and stripped, but not oily either. By mid-afternoon, I still get a little shine on my forehead, but it’s manageable with blotting papers instead of looking like I dipped my face in olive oil.
The 19 oz bottle is massive. I pump it twice daily (morning and evening), and I’m only about halfway through after four months. At this rate, it’ll last me closer to seven or eight months, which makes the price point even better. The pump dispenser works smoothly every single time — no clogging, no sputtering on the last pump.
✅ The good stuff
- Controls oil for 6-8 hours without that tight, stripped feeling
- Huge 19 oz bottle lasts 4+ months with twice-daily use — incredible value
- Fragrance-free formula doesn’t smell like anything (perfect for sensitive noses)
- Pump dispenser is reliable and doesn’t waste product
- Visibly reduced pore size around my nose after 3 weeks of consistent use
❌ Worth knowing
- Pump cap feels flimsy and cracked slightly when I dropped it from counter height (about 3 feet)
- No instructions on how much to use or whether it’s suitable for double cleansing
- Can be slightly drying if you use it more than twice a day (learned that the hard way)
My honest take
This isn’t a miracle worker that’ll transform your skin overnight, but it’s an incredibly solid, dependable cleanser that does exactly what it promises. If you’re dealing with oily skin or that annoying combination where your T-zone gets greasy but your cheeks stay normal, this handles it beautifully. The fact that it’s non-comedogenic matters — I haven’t had a single breakout that I could trace back to this cleanser, which is more than I can say for some fancier brands I’ve tried.
The only real downside is the packaging quality. The pump works great, but the plastic bottle and cap feel cheaper than the formula inside deserves. I dropped it once in my shower, and while the bottle was fine, the pump cap cracked slightly. It still works, but it’s annoying for a product at this price point. Also, I wish CeraVe would include better usage instructions. I had to Google whether I should use this as a first or second cleanse, and how much niacinamide is actually in the formula. Minor complaints for an otherwise excellent product.
Have oily or combination skin that gets shiny throughout the day, want a fragrance-free option that won’t irritate sensitive skin, or you’re tired of cleansers that either strip your face or leave it feeling greasy. It’s also perfect if you’re looking for something reliable that just works without needing a 10-step routine.
Skip it if you…
Have very dry skin (this is formulated for oily skin types and might be too stripping), or if you’re looking for a creamy, moisturizing cleanser. This foaming formula is all about removing excess oil, not adding hydration.
