Bottom Line
This workhorse skillet delivers restaurant-quality sears and gets better with every meal you cook in it.
I’ve been cooking with my Lodge 12 Inch Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet almost daily for the past six months, and it’s honestly become my most-reached-for pan. At $34.90, I was skeptical it could replace my collection of non-stick and stainless pans, but this thing has completely changed how I cook. From breakfast eggs to perfect steaks, this skillet does it all.
What I like about it
The first thing that impressed me was how it arrived ready to use. I literally unboxed it, rinsed it quickly, and started cooking bacon that same night. No complicated seasoning process or break-in period needed. The pre-seasoning held up perfectly, and I’ve noticed it’s gotten noticeably more non-stick over time. My eggs slide around now like they’re on ice, whereas in month one I had to use a bit more oil.
The heat retention is genuinely incredible. I seared a ribeye last week at screaming high temps, and the pan stayed so hot that I got those perfect crosshatch marks you see at steakhouses. I can crank my stovetop to high, get it properly heated (I give it about 5 minutes), and it holds that heat like nothing else I own. I’ve also thrown it straight into my oven at 475°F to finish thick pork chops, and it transitions without any warping or issues. The fact that it works on my buddy’s induction cooktop when I’m visiting is a bonus too.
What really sold me is the versatility. I’ve used this for everything from cornbread to stir-fries to deep-frying chicken. It’s heavy enough to feel substantial (definitely a two-handed lift when it’s full), but that weight is what gives it such even heating. No hot spots like my old thin pans had.
✅ The good stuff
- Gets blazing hot and maintains temperature perfectly for restaurant-quality sears
- Actually pre-seasoned and ready to cook right away—no prep work needed
- Seamlessly goes from stovetop to 500°F oven, incredibly versatile
- Non-stick performance improves with every use as seasoning layers build
- Works on every heat source including induction and even campfires
❌ Worth knowing
- The included care instructions are pretty basic—I had to Google proper cleaning techniques
- Box arrived slightly dented (pan was fine, but packaging could be tougher)
- It’s heavy—about 8 lbs—so not ideal if you have wrist issues
My honest take
After six months of near-daily use, this skillet has earned its permanent spot on my stovetop. I don’t even put it away anymore because I use it so often. The seasoning has developed beautifully—it’s now a deep, glossy black that food just releases from effortlessly. My steaks come out with a crust I could never achieve before, and my vegetables get this amazing caramelization. The 12-inch size is perfect for cooking for two to four people comfortably.
The only real downsides are minor. I wish Lodge included better care instructions because I initially wasn’t sure if I could use soap (you can, by the way—modern dish soap won’t strip the seasoning). The packaging was a bit flimsy when mine arrived, though the skillet itself was perfectly fine. And yes, it’s heavy, but that’s what makes it work so well. At under $35, this is hands-down the best value in my kitchen. It’ll outlast every other pan I own and probably get passed down to my kids someday.
Want steakhouse-quality sears at home without expensive equipment, cook a variety of foods and want one pan that does it all, or are ready to invest in cookware that literally lasts generations and improves with age.
Skip it if you…
Have wrist or strength issues that make heavy cookware difficult, or need something lightweight for quick one-handed flipping and tossing.
